Wildlife expeditions - Birdwatcthing

Occasionally called the “eighth continent” for its utterly unique wildlife.

We have selected this tour especially for ornithologists and naturalists because it combines Madagascar unique and rich biodiversity. This wonderful explorations will make you discover most fascinating Malagasy birdlife as well as plants and animals,spectacular landscapes, and various National Parks all famous for the rich fauna and flora. Madagascar records 291 species of breeding birds but nearly 50% of them are total or partial endemic (also present on the neighboring islands), 5 families are only known in Madagascar.

Day 1: Arrival Tana.

Arrival at the airport. Meet and assist by the tour guide. Briefing and transfer in town. Overnight at LES 03 METIS.

Day 2: Tana – Andasibe (Rain Forest)

Breakfast. Drive to Andasibe. Stopover at the bridge of the Mangoro River for a birding: with chance, you might see Madagascar Prantincole, Eleonora’s Falcon, Sooty Falcon .Lunch in Moramanga.
First immersion in the forest: Madagascar pond heron, Madagascar coucal, Madagascar hoopoe, Madagascar wagtail, Madagascar red fody and many others.
Overnight and dinner at INDRI LODGE.
Night walk by the evening, to look for some nocturnal species of bird such as Madagascar long-eared owl. We may see some reptiles and frogs as well, notably chameleons, geckoes, snakes, last but not least nocturnal lemurs such as Mouse lemurs ...

Day 3: Visit of Analamazaotra National Park

Breakfast at the hotel then exploration of Analamazaotra National Park with a local guide, we will begin the visit with birding: according to the season you may meet Cuckoo-roller, Madagascar blue pigeon, Madagascar spinetail, Common (wattled) Sunbird-asity, Long-billed and Spectacled greenbuls, Crossley’s babbler, various Vangas and Ward’s flycatcher.
The reserve is as well a sanctuary of the famous Indri Indri (the biggest lemurs), as well as other species.

Day 4: Mantadia National Park

Early breakfast, drive to Mantadia, 37km from Perinet. Mantadia is one of Madagascar’s prime sites for rainforest birding. All the rainforest-dependent Ground-rollers could be seen there, as well as other sought-after rainforest specials like Brown mesite, Collared nightjar, Grey-crowned greenbul, White-throated and Yellow-browed oxylabes, Brown emutail and Red forest fody. The unusual Helmet Vanga also could be seen there, therare Pollen’s Vanga could be regularly seen.

Day 5: Andasibe – Tana

Breakfast. Drive back to Antananarivo. City Tour by the afternoon. Overnight and dinner at LES 03 METIS.

Day 6: Antananarivo - Ampijoroa 440 Km

Early breakfast. Drive to Ampijoroa. Beautiful landscape. Arrival in Ampijoroa Reserve by the afteronnon. Overnight in bungalows or camping in the reserve.
With a local guide, night walk to look for Grey Mouse lemur and Sportive lemur...

Day 7: Ankarafantsika National Park (dry deciduous forest)

Breakfast. Full day walk within Ankarafantsika National Park. The reserve is one of Madagascar’s most impressive remaining example of tropical dry deciduous forest. All the island’s Western forest endemics species could be found here. With a local guide, we will try to find White-breasted mesite, Coquerel’s coua, Schlegel’s asity and the Van Dam’s Vanga. They represent just a sample of what is to see in Ampijoroa, a site often regarded by wildlife enthusiasts as the highlight of the trip. A night walk into the woods should reveal Dry forest scops owl and Madagascar nightjar, as well as a variety of nocturnal lemurs and many reptiles. There is a lake near the “Gite of Ampijoroa” where Madagascar fish eagles are resident. This species is critically endangered among the world’s 6 rarest raptors. Overnight in the bungalows or Camping.

Day 8: Ampijoroa - Majunga

Breakfast. Then drive to Majunga, about 120km. We take morning excursion by boat on the wide red Betsiboka Delta where we will look for rare endemic birds such as Madagascar white ibis and Madagascar Bernier’s teal, which frequent small oval shaped islets clad in mangroves.
City tour to admire the biggest Baobab tree in the World.
Overnight and dinner at LES ROCHES ROUGES.

Day 9: Majunga - Antananarivo

Breakfast. Transfer to the airport as per flight schedule. Flight to Antananarivo. Meet and assist upon arrival. Transfer in town.
Overnight and dinner at LES 03 METIS.

Day 10: Antananarivo – Ranomafana 430 km (8hours)

Breakfast. Full day driving from Tana to Ranomafana National Park. Stopover in Antsirabe, city tour and visit of some workshop in town: sweets workshop showing traditional way of making sweets, a jeweler’s workshop and a horn workshop. Then continuation to Ambositra, through beautiful terraced ricefields and forests of eucalyptus. Ambositra is the centre of Madagascar’s wood carving industry.
Lunch in restaurant
Arrival in Ranomafana by the end of the afternoon.

Day 11: Ranomafana National Park

Starting early in the morning for bird watching in Ranomafana rainforest, one of Madagascar’s richest site for rainforest wildlife, particularly birds. It is excellent for rarities like Madagascar crested ibis, Henst’s goshawk, the beautiful rainforest-dependent ground-rollers (especially the Pitta-like, which is reasonably plentiful in the park), Velvet asity, Common sunbird asity, various Vangas (notably Blue, Rufous, Hook-billed, Chabert’s, Red-tailed and Pollen’s), Forest rock-thrush, Green Jery, Brown Newtonia and the Cryptic warbler.
At higher elevation, Rufous-headed ground-roller and Yellow-bellied sunbird asity are present in fair numbers, making Vohiparara the best place to seek these species. As in Périnet (and the other places we visit), we are bound to see plenty of mammals, reptiles, frogs and fascinating invertebrates. Remember, nearly everything you see in Madagascar is found nowhere else.
Visit of Ranomafana village by the afternoon, possibility of swimming at the thermal pool as well.

Day 12: Ranomafana - Ranohira 358km

Breakfast. Drive to Isalo National Park. First stopover in Fianarantsoa for a city tour the second one is in Ambalavao for lunch and to visit the Antaimoro paper mill workshop: handmade papers which are decorated with dried petals.
After lunch, drive about 15 km far from Ambalavao, visit of Ny Anjà associative villager’s park. Home of many ring-tailed lemurs (the catta), this visit allows you to get close to these sympathetic lemurs. There are as well a large variety of typical plants of Madagascar.
Overnight and dinner at ISALO RANCH.

Day 13: Isalo National Park

Breakfast. Briefing with the local guide, exploration of Isalo National Park. It is not a recommended place for bird watching but it’s where we can spot the Benson’s Rock thrush. It is the most visited National Park in Madagascar because of its amazing landscapes and canyons.

Day 14: Ranohira – Zombitse – Tuléar 250 km

Departure before daybreak for Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park, which protects the last transition forest where western and southern habitat types merge. Birders come from around the globe to seek the endemic Appert’sgreenbul, as well as Zombitse’s many other species. We will look for Madagascar partridge, Madagascar buttonquail, the stately Giant coua, Crested coua, Madagascar green pigeon, Madagascar sandgrouse, Madagascar hoopoe, Greater and Lesser vasa parrots, Grey-headed lovebird, Madagascar lesser cuckoo, various Vangas (particularly White-headed, Blue, Hook-billed and Rufous), Madagascar cuckoo-shrike, Thamnornis warbler, Common newtonia and Common jery.
Picnic lunch.
Drive to Tuléar.
Overnight and dinner at MORINGA.

Day 15: Tuléar - Ifaty 23 km

Breakfast. Transfer to Ifaty, a beautiful sea resort but a beautiful spot for birding as well.
Accommodation on full board basis at LA MIRA.

Day 16: Ifaty

Breakfast. With a local guide, visit of the spiny forest to explore its rich endemic species in fauna and flora: baobabs, pachypodiums, moringas... As for birds, the two star attractions here are the Sub-desert mesite and Long-tailed ground-roller, both declining in numbers in their narrow range. We may see Lafresnaye’s and Sicklebill vangas, Archbold’snewtonia and Sub-desert brush-warbler as well.
Afternoon free for leisure by the seaside.

Day 17: Tuléar – Antananarivo

Breakfast. Transfer to Tuléar. Flight to Tana as per the schedule. Meet and assist upon arrival and transfer in town.
Overnight and dinner at LES 03 METIS.

Day 18: Depart Antananarivo

Breakfast. City tour to explore the different spots that make Tana an exceptional town. Panoramic view at upper town after visiting the Queen’s Palace and its vicinity.
Then drive to the handicrafts market at the “Digue” to buy some souvenirs. Transfer to the airport by the evening, flight to Europe.
